John Orenstein
John Orenstein was in-house at RBC Dain Rauscher for thirteen years, where he managed litigation and counseled internal clients in a wide range of areas, including fixed income, regulatory compliance and employment matters. John was also in-house at a hedge fund that is now a major Ross & Orenstein client. John regularly handles the bondholder activist cases that are a focus of Ross & Orenstein's practice, including Fairfax Financial Holdings (concerning the correct calculation of a conversion rate) and Empire Resorts (concerning the company's obligation to repurchase securities) in the state courts in New York. Since forming the firm with Jeff Ross, John also has handled FINRA arbitrations for individual and institutional investors, served as special counsel to a debtor in bankruptcy, represented creditors in adversary proceedings in bankruptcy, and advised and represented firms and individuals in employment, noncompete and regulatory matters.
John is a graduate of Oberlin College and its Conservatory of Music (’80), where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with High Honors, and Columbia Law School (’83). He clerked for the Honorable William B. Bryant in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. John practiced litigation for ten years, trying cases before judges and juries, before going in-house. He is a member of the New York and Minnesota bars and is a qualified neutral in Minnesota. John has held the Series 7, 24 and 53 licenses.
